General Information about the Unit

In order to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students a list of standards has been provided for teachers. Although these standards are very similar to those presented throughout the lesson, these standards are provided for learners who need challenges or those students who are struggling.  Information regarding the standards met for each field trip will be provided upon request.  Please contact Scott Corkery, our Field Trip Director at (478) 755-9539.

General Information about Field Trip

The field trip price cost per child is $5.00. Field Trips may be booked Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm. Field Trips last approximately 2 hours and do include a GCM staff person on site.  Students will be advised to bring a sack lunch or may purchase a boxed lunch (see attached). The class can eat in the loft of the Children's Museum or if it is a nice day outside in the grassy areas surrounding the museum.

The Georgia Children’s Museum encourages all patrons to visit all area museums in the downtown Museum District. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is conveniently located next door to GCM in the Cherry Street Plaza. Joint field trips are available
with advance notice. Go to GSHOF Education for more information or contact Scott Corkery to schedule your joint field trip to both museums!

Japanese Culture

As part of the museum’s current theme, Get Cultured! A Worldly Spin on Fun!  The theme of Japanese culture exposes the students to traditions and ideas that are commonplace to children in Japan.  The activities include a Yoshino cherry tree craft for younger students or Japanese calligraphy for the older students, listening and acting out a Japanese folk tale, playing traditional Japanese games similar to their American counterparts, and even tasting green tea in a Japanese tea ceremony.  Recent visitors of this field trip gave their appraisal and claimed it to be their best field trips of the year!

Journalism Exhibit

Utilizing the museum’s unique Journalism exhibit, this field trip allows students to explore the world of journalism.  Due to the success of our Pennies for the Press campaign, new life-size journalists from local affiliates will allow the students to relate to their favorite local personalities.  The various activities allow kids to use their imaginations in order to create captions, to be news detectives, and to make collages of a specific news genre.  This field trip teaches the structure of a newspaper and the basics of writing a good news article.

Passport to the World: A Salute to Macon’s Sister Cities

Bring your class on a field trip around the world at GCM’s new Sister Cities exhibit. Visit countries such as France, Ghana, Japan, Russia, and South Korea. The students can take part in a drum/percussion circle, draw their best friend’s portrait, take part in a Japanese tea ceremony, and/or for the older students write fun phrases in authentic Japanese calligraphy. And don’t worry, we supply their own GCM passport that they can stamp at each stop they make.

Field Trip Policies

DEPOSITS & CANCELLATIONS
A 50% deposit is required when the contract is returned.  This deposit serves as a reservation for your field trip.  Your deposit is fully refundable provided the trip is cancelled at least two weeks in advance.  Trips cancelled less than two weeks from the reservation date are subject to forfeiture of deposit.  Your deposit will be applied to your total balance, and the remaining balance will be due upon arrival. If the deposit deadline cannot be met, you must call 478-755-9539 to speak with the Field Trip Coordinator.

BEHAVIOR
Educators and chaperones are responsible for the behavior of their students at all times while visiting the Museum.  All students must stay with their chaperones.  We reserve the right to ask any disorderly group, student, educator, chaperone or bus driver to leave the building.  Under this circumstance, refunds will not be granted.  The school is responsible for any damage to any Museum property while your students are on the field trip. Please ask students to mind their “Museum manners” and refrain from running or yelling.  We reserve the right to decline visitation to unruly groups.

ELEVATOR
We ask that student groups use the elevator only in cases of physical need or to transport lunches, so that guests who require the assistance of the elevator may use it in a timely manner.  Groups found not abiding by this policy will be asked to exit the elevator.

LUNCH AT THE MUSEUM
Although we offer a facility for large lunch groups inside of our museum, you are certainly welcome to bringing a sack lunch to be enjoyed in one of the nearby parks (i.e. Central City Park or Ocmulgee Heritage Trail).  The museum offers a café with refreshments and some food items.  Boxed lunches are available from the Around the World Café for $4.00 per person.  A boxed lunch contains a ham & cheese or pb&j sandwich, fresh fruit, a cookie and a juice box.  Pre orders maybe placed by calling 478-755-9539 or faxing to 478-755-8367.
